"Access programs from broadcast sources outside the facility, an inaudible low frequency signal automatically cues the event in pre-determined spots on the playback program.Microphones, consoles, editing systems, and auto¬mated playback systems are mirrored throughout the facility. If one system goes down, another can be used to continue the task.…To oversee all aspects of the broadcast chain, even when he is out of the building, Tong has full access to all the automated functions in the broad¬cast chain (consoles, mix engines, routers) from his cell phone equipped with Windows mobile phone capabilities or from his home computer over VPN secured connection. This aspect of JAZZ FM91's operation is quite impressive. It is an all-encompassing and completely fail-safe method of avoiding down time.…At the heart of JAZZ FM91 is a live concert room with a glass skylight and equipped with studio monitors and full recording/mixing. Small jazz combos perform in an intimate space with a live audience. The room is well-designed visually and resembles a cozy, well-furnished jazz club. A baby grand piano is the centerpiece of the room. The concerts are recorded by Tong, who performs the FOH mix tasks as well as recording the event for future broadcasting and archiving. He mixes and masters the recording himself as well. His mix engine is a Yamaha DME24 with Auvitran AVY16ES Ethersound Remote Module. Monitors are Kling & Freitag CA 106. …All his choices are geared to making the staff at JAZZ FM91 comfortable and enthusiastic in interact¬ing with technology. Simplifying and standardizing, without compromising quality and choice, is chal¬lenging at the best of times. Anyone working profes¬sionally in audio knows this firsthand. The startling revelation of this visit to JAZZ FM91's studios is that Tong seems to have achieved this balance in every respect. To anyone who understands the precarious balance between technology and creativity, this is quite a noteworthy achievement."

“Austria - What makes the floating stage so unique isn't just the striking panoramic backdrop, it's the creative demands it makes on everyone involved in a production staged here - from the singers to the design team, technicians, wardrobe and stunt men (yes, that's right stunt men - but more of that later!). The surroundings of the stage not only encompass the alpine mountains and picturesque towns of Austria but those of Germany and Switzerland as well. …With all this going on, perhaps one of the most challenging elements in mounting a production on the floating stage is to maintain the audience's focus. With so much natural scenery to distract the eye it's easy to lose sight of a performer. The show's success relies heavily on an elaborate sound system and clever lighting. …Sound: An integral element of the show on the floating stage is the PA. In general, operas are rarely amplified, but given the stage location, its phenomenal size and the uncontrollable atmospheric conditions, it's the only way the audience is able to hear, position and locate each performer on stage. Even with a huge PA this is not as simple as you may think. The system utilises over 900 speakers positioned on stage and around the seating area, all controlled individually and all responsive to a performer positioning system. David Pountney, director of the Bregenz Festival, enthuses: "Our new sound system is so highly developed that it can be used as a means of artistic interpretation by the conductor." …Complementing this is the new room simulation module, which facilitates interactive real-time rendering of real and artificial surroundings. To realise this, 780 coaxial loudspeakers from German manufacturer Kling & Freitag (K&F) plus six CA 1215 cabinets from K&F, … , are installed in the auditorium. …On stage, four large loudspeaker towers are located within the set wall plus there are speaker towers, left and right of the auditorium, comprising K&F a … . Supplementing the main system and hidden in the back wall and dotted around the rest of the set are smaller speaker groups. Gögele elaborates: "Here we use K&F, … speaker systems. Every element is aimed to specific areas of the audience. We have very wide angle speakers for up-close audience situations and for the first few rows, then smaller angles and higher SPLs for the rows further back. The system works on a delicate balancing act of delay levels and SPLs. The closer the speaker to the performer's position, the higher the SPL and the smaller the delay. Speakers further away from the performer have lower SPLs and longer delay - it is the combination of these speaker and the level settings of the soloists from FOH that gives a 3D picture of where the performer is located on the stage." …”Extract from Lighting & Sound November 2007Text: Sarah Rushton-Read
“In one word - Indulgence - it accurately illustrates all that is Jakarta's latest entertainment and hospitality multiplex, the Sun City Luxury Club. Located in the Lindeteves Trade Centre, Sun City, with its own vision of grandeur has become unique beat within the local entertainment rhythm and is unlike any other entertainment establishments in all of Indonesia. A visit to Sun City will make you agree that this is not your average run-of-the-mill entertainment complex, but a collective establishment designed within a single sprawling edifice, and encompasses a world-class hotel, including a large plenary hall, a magnificent fine dining Chinese restaurant, a world music live lounge, and an exclusive karaoke nightclub opulent in its Baroque surroundings and luxurious in its gilded details and designs, and where every desire awaits fulfilment.…BallroomOne of the first of many tasks that Didi had to look into was to design the sound system for the Plenary Hall Ballroom - a spacious multi-purpose venue with a flexible staging system, and targeted for conferences and conventions or for VIP and wedding functions. Here Didi opted to use the Kling & Freitag Access system as the main PA. Customised in ivory-white, the Access cabinets were mounted above the main stage In Left/Right clusters using 10 K&F Access T5 and 2 K&F Access T9, and 8 K&F Access B5 with low support coming from 4 K&F Access B10 at front ends of the stage. A further 4 K&F Line 212-6 loudspeakers augment the hail's audio system "Most at the speakers used the conventional point source design - the main objective being to cover the seating [audience] with an even field and good quality sound," explains Didi about his design. For the stage floor monitors, there are 8 K&F CA 1001, 2 K&F CA 1201-M ... Loudspeaker management and ancillary processing is by 6 K&F CS/9, 2 K&F C10 controller's and 2 TC Electronic X024 - each being assigned to the individual zone/facility … The foyer uses 4 K&F CA 106 loudspeakers and 2" K&F SW 112 subs.…Music lounge Located on the 6th level is the Music Lounge and Karaoke nightclub. … The lounge uses a horizontally mounted Kling & Freitag Line 212 system as the main FOH with the speaker brackets slightly angled towards the seating facing the length of the stage. The K&F's positioning also took into consideration the restricted throw distance of the speakers towards the back wall. As In the ballroom system, the positioning of the speaker's here follows the conventional point source design. The house system comprises 2 K&F Line212-9, 1 K&F Line 212-6, 3 K&F CA 1215-6. 1 K&F CA 1001, and 2 K&F CA 106 loudspeakers, with lows support from 6 K&F SW215E subs and 3 K&F SW 112 subs. For the stage floor monitors, there are 6 K&F CA 1001 wedges driven by 3 MC2 Audio T2000 amplifiers. Loudspeaker management and ancillary processing is from a single K&F CD44 Digital Controller …”

Diane Schurr at the stage of Java Jazz Festival 2007
"This year’s Java Jazz Festival was held at the capital’s Jakarta Convention Center for the third consecutive year, and looked to build on the successful foundations laid down during the previous two years’ events. The event is heavily sponsored by the country’s main broadcasters and fully supported by the Indonesian Government, which is trying to assure foreign visitors that Jakarta – and, indeed, the whole of Indonesia – is a safe destination to visit, despite the travel warnings given by many overseas governments....Having attracted around 52,000 spectators over the course of the three-day event in 2006 – at which the late, great James Brown had been one of the international headliners – the 2007 festival didn’t disappoint. The 30,000-sq-m modern landmark that is the JCC is strategically located in the centre of the city, and the independently-staged event drew music revellers seeking out the soul, R&B, reggae, hip-hop, rap, pop, rock, ethnic, gospel, electro, Latin grooves that were on offer – in addition, of course, to the jazz. One of the main appeals of the JJF is that punters can watch as many of their favourite artists as possible on any of the event’s 15 stages and, although this often means having to stage-hop and leave a show before it ends in order to catch another, the variously sized halls and spacious lobby areas hosting the performances all offer something for everyone....Distributor and equipment supplier La Mesa sponsored one of the stages, where performers Sadao Watanabe, Diane Schurr and Airto Moirera played. Kling & Freitag loudspeakers were used FOH in the 1,200-capacity hall, with two Line 212s augmented by two SW 215 subwoofers, that were positioned on either side of the 12m-wide stage. In addition, K&F CA 1001 active monitors were used on stage, with four CA 106 cabinets for front fills. As in 2006, ticket prices were kept low in order to attract as large an audience as possible. Although gate receipts and merchandising provide alternative sources of income, it is the heavy sponsorship of the JJF that contributes most, which is a concern should any of these sponsors cease to support a festival that lives up to its billing and more. In addition, broadcasting rights and DVD sales from the shows provide further revenue streams....The jazz festival in Jakarta may still be in its infancy compared to established events such as the Montreux Festival in Switzerland, but the potential of this growing event is enormous. The reassuring aspect from the overseas artists, their managers and travelling engineers was clear – the sound quality was probably on par, if not higher than that of American and European festivals. Given the extensive rehearsals and the inventory of equipment on offer in each venue, intelligible audio was the order of the three days from the various PA systems scattered across the Jakarta Convention Center. The Jakarta Post summed up the festival by stating that Indonesia’s musical ability has now been recognised by the best names in the music world, and indeed it has. The message was extremely clear – the Jakarta Jazz Festival has come of age and this will, no doubt, lead to bigger acts and increased gate receipts in 2008. If the Western engineers that came to work with some of the artists were afraid that they were going to be handicapped by an inadequate PA system, they were both surprised and generally relieved."

"The extension and modernisation of Feria Valencia will make it Spain's biggest trade fair venue with a covered exhibition area of 3050,000 square metres.…"Feria de Valencia first contacted me in March 2005 to prepare a specification for products to go in each room. However, once we started working on it we realised we could do much more than just specify a series of stand alone elements, Instead we tried to prepare an integrated audio and video system and not just for each single room or auditorium but for the whole building."The first floor features the main 800 seat auditorium, which was the most challenging aspect of the project according to Media Sys commercial Director Josep Foguet. Here the team decided to use Kling & Freitag's Line 212 5 and Line 212 9 cabinets in an array set up. Two 212 and one 212 6's were installed per side. The smaller 212 6s being used to cover the back rows and balcony whilst the 212 9s were chosen to cover the main body of the audience. Both units are self powered and are controlled by Kling & Freitag C10 and C2 loudspeaker controllers.…The front fills are four CA 106 cabinets, with low frequency reinforcement coming from B 10 sub bass units.”

The new production of Giacomo Puccinis opera “Tosca” at the Bregenz Festival 2007 will premiere a new sound system. Approximately 800 speakers were installed in the open-air auditorium of the world’s largest lake stage on Lake Constance. The system that was especially developed for Bregenz in cooperation with the Fraunhofer Society, is designed to produce a kind of surround sound outdoors, David Pountney, director of the Bregenz Festival, said on Friday in Munich. “Our new sound system is so highly developed that it can be used as a means of interpretation by the conductor.” The premiere of “Tosca” on the lake stage will commence the Bregenz Festival on 19th July. The director Philipp Himmelmann wants to stage Puccini’s love triangle as a thriller. The stage design will be spectacular, but not technically overloaded, says Himmelmann. The preparations are running full-swing. … The festival will run from 18th July through 19th August.
Singapore's hip quota keeps moving up the scale almost constantly. Ministry of Sound and the recently opened mega entertainment complex St. James Power Station are just some of the better publicised venues that have helped transform Singapore into offering an engaging evening. Singapore has much to offer in terms of variety of entertainment from Canto pubs, Indian pubs, Karaoke and different genre of live music venues to dance clubs, catering to just about any one's interest. Adding further vibe to the scene is The Ballroom which opened its doors in November 2006. As the name suggests, The Ballroom is dedicated to those who are serious about their Waltz, Tango and Salsa. This 18,000 ft2 venue is located at the latest up and coming area in Singapore - Tanglin Village. Tanglin Village which is within the Dempsey Road area is opposite the Singapore Botanic Gardens and is only minutes away from Orchard Road.…The dance area has specialised flooring that ballroom dancers will appreciate. But that's not all. "It was very important to me that the sound system to be installed had to be top notch as ballroom dancers are fairly particular about this aspect." Alvin again meticulously did his research and hired well-known sound engineer Wahab to help him with the sound system. …Wahab got to work on the blue print and had suggested to Alvin to meet up with Daniel from Peak Fusion, the distributor for Beyerdynamic and Kling & Freitag systems. Alvin comments, "Daniel was very professional in his dealings with me. He gave me a demo of the K&F speakers and I was blown over by the speakers' performance. I had absolutely no doubt in my mind that I wanted the K&F speakers. I had previously had the opportunity to listen to other systems as well but in my opinion there was a huge difference in performance. I made a 100% upfront payment to Daniel, though the K&F speakers were costlier than the other systems I had listened to."The dancefloor uses 4 (wall mounted) K&F CA 1515-6 loudspeakers (2-way, 15"+1.5" system) with lows supported from a wall flushed K&F SWi 215 (2x 15") subwoofer. Another 2 K&F SW 115 (15") subwoofers are placed (floor mounted) at corners of the dance area to ensure even coverage. ... Along with the comfy leather sofas at the Piano Lounge, are 2 K&F CA 215-6 wall mounted speakers (2-way, 12"+1.5" system) as the main PA with 2 K&F CA 106 (2-way, 6.5+1" system) installed for side-fills ensuring that the live as well as piped in music are pleasing to the ears of the patrons. Foldback monitors are from 2 K&F CA 1215 - M wedges to serve the performers. … The Ballroom has already proven to be a hit with Ballroom dancing enthusiasts. Alvin satisfyingly comments that he even has guests flying down from Indonesia, Thailand and other neighbouring countries just to have a weekend out at The Ballroom. Alvin comments, " have taken pains to ensure that this is not just a club for Ballroom dancers but their second home." …Extract from entertainment technology asia January / February 2007
